Cricket Club stalwart receives Service to Sport award

P1020158

Congratulations to Treasurer and long time club stalwart, Terry Kavanagh, who has this week picked up a Service to Sport Award at the Harrogate District Sports Council annual dinner and awards ceremony.  The award recognises Terry’s outstanding commitment and contribution to the sport of cricket.

Terry has been a member of Spofforth CC since the very early 1950?s and was the first captain of a Spofforth Junior Team when he led the U16?s to championship victory in 1953.  He went on to captain the 1st XI for many years in the 1960?s and 70?s winning numerous trophies during his spell in charge, he later led the 2nd XI for a number of years.

In addition to his playing Terry has held various positions within the management of the club and continues to this day in his invaluable role managing the finances of the club as Treasurer.

Once again Terry well done, this award is very well deserved!!

Spofforth in Bloom Update

Spofforth in Bloom: chairman, David Saunders, writes ‘Following on from our success last year in the national competition our objective this year is to win gold once again in the Yorkshire In Bloom competition. The floral display is just one element of the competition which also awards marks for our heritage, environment and community involvement. Last year we raised funds for a number of projects including the Oak leaf sculpture and extra information boards that contributed towards our success. This year our objective is to raise funds towards the following projects: a new village entry sign on the Harrogate road advertising the village success in Britain in Bloom, a new village notice board, a trophy cabinet for the village hall and the regeneration of the Millennium Garden. We have been busy organising our 2013 fund raising calendar and have planned the following events, Quiz and Chips Night Friday, April 19; Heritage Trail with BBQ Sunday afternoon, June 9; Strawberry tea in the Old Rectory Sunday, July 14; Gardening Question Time (date to be confirmed, possibly October) and Open Gardens Sunday, June 23. ( If you would be willing to volunteer to open your garden on June 23, please contact John Stanley 591154 or Lynda Parkinson 590507). Please come along to support these events because every penny raised is reinvested in the appearance and enhancement of our village. By popular request we have been asked to reintroduce the Sponsor a Tub scheme at £20 a tub. Anyone wishing to sponsor and have their name on one of our tubs please contact and pay our Treasurer Ann Thomas 590504, or contact any committee member. In recognition of our efforts last year our MP Nigel Adams (who attended the judging day ) has organised a tour of the House of Commons for any resident of the village. Date, as yet, to be confirmed. If you are interested in a day out in London please give one of us a call so we can have an idea of numbers.’
