Pennies for St Michael's Hospice

E-mail Print PDF

For many years St Michael's Hospice in Harrogate has asked individuals to support their essential work by collecting pennies - originally in smarties tubes (until the shape changed) and more recently in Steredent tubes.  If you would like to support this scheme please start collecting one pence pieces - you don't need a special tube, a plastic bag will suffice!

Joan Surral has kindly agreed to receive collected pennies and take them to St Michael's Hospice.  Joan can be contacted on 01937 590249, or you can drop your pennies off at the   Coffee Mornings.  All donations gratefully received and as the saying goes ' look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves!'

At the final game of the season, Simon Taylor and Simon Giddings presented a cheque to Martin House Children's Hospice for £1,250 having raised the money from their 'Around the Grounds' cycle challenge which took them to every ground in the Nidderdale League.  A similar amount was raised for the proposed modernisation of the clubhouse at School Lane.

resized_sib_gold_award.jpgSpofforth has triumphed in this year's Yorkshire in Bloom awards and was presented with a much deserved gold rose award alongside being joint category winners in the villages section!

The competition is part of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Britain in Bloom campaign and judging criteria are based on horticultural achievement, environmental responsibility and community participation.

John Stanley, chairman of Spofforth in Bloom, said "it was excellent and overwhelming to discover we had won.  It's an achievement for the whole village and it was a delight for us to accept the award on behalf of the village.  All parts of the community have pulled together to make this a wonderful place to live throughout the year."

Executive members of Yorkshire in Bloom will shortly be approaching the entrants who did well to see if they are prepared to represent Yorkshire in the national RHS Britain in Bloom finals in 2012 so we could soon see Spofforth up there with the best!
